Diana town fire destroys newly built house

CITY OF DIANA, New York (WWNY) – “I spent about 11 months building this with my bare hands, literally,” said Camron Arnold.

Arnold was at home with his girlfriend and a friend when the fire started in the garage. It happened after 5 p.m. Sunday night on Old State Road in Diana Town.

Arnold says they saw flames pass through the slab of rock in the garage and the fire spread quickly.

“The whole garage was in place. The propane tank on the side was in danger of exploding, so we were afraid for our lives, ”said Arnold.

All three of the house made it out unharmed.

Firefighters on site say the house is a total loss.

For Arnold, it’s a tough pill to swallow. He lost his leg in a factory accident and used the settlement money to build the house.

He says it was finished about four weeks ago.

“And I put every penny I had in this place. So that’s a total of about, I don’t know, $ 111,000. With computers, sofas, televisions, ”said Arnold.

Arnold says he didn’t even have insurance yet, because the house is brand new. He waited until everything was finalized before taking out insurance.

“And sadly, we are just finished and were in the market as we speak. I had a phone call with State Farm tomorrow morning for home insurance, ”Arnold said.

Arnold says there is a silver lining. His mother lives next door, so he can stay there until he finds something more permanent.

“Fortunately, it’s a great, tight-knit community here. So my mom, my family are trying to help in any way they can, ”said Arnold.

As for the fire itself, Arnold believes an electrical problem started it. Firefighters on the scene say the cause is under investigation.
