HARRISBURG – Legislation that would offer protections to insurance consumers by Pennsylvania, sponsored by Rep. Tina Pickett (R-Bradford/Sullivan/Susquehanna), was adopted unanimously in House of Representatives Monday, according to a press release from Pickett’s office.

“The need for this legislation was revealed a few years ago when a mutual insurance company in my district explained the challenges it faces in updating policies and providing a less confusing method. for consumers, ”said Pickett, who chairs the Home insurance committee. “These bills would bring about the necessary reforms and also ensure consumer protection during the process of renewing the insurance policy.”

According to the press release, Pickett’s bills would allow companies that sell auto and home insurance to change or reduce the types and limits of coverage when renewing a policy if such changes are approved by the commissioner. state insurance. The insurer must seek approval of proposed policy changes at least 90 days before they come into effect.

By law, the insurer must also provide the insured with a clearly labeled notice of the approved changes that describes them in detail at least 60 days before the effective date. Pennsylvania Department of Insurance is required to post any filing approval on its website.

Bills 1679 and 1680 will then be examined by the Senate.
